What happened in 1978? Year 1978 (MCMLXXVIII) was a common year starting on Sunday The first computer bulletin board system (CBBS) is created in Chicago. U.S. President Jimmy Carter decides to postpone production of the neutron bomb - a weapon which kills people with radiation but leaves buildings relatively intact. Volkswagen becomes the second (after Rolls-Royce) non-American automobile manufacturer to open a plant in the United States Garfield, which eventually becomes the world's most widely syndicated comic strip, makes its debut. Pope Paul VI dies in Rome. Pope John Paul I is elected to succeed Pope Paul VI. Pope John Paul I dies after only 33 days of papacy. Pope John Paul II (Cardinal Karol Wojty?a) succeeds Pope John Paul I as the 264th pope. He is the first Polish pope in history.Artificial insulin is invented. Also in 1978, Sam and Marlene Grandberg purchased land to be used as a camp for the spiritual growth and pleasure of Christians in the Pudget Sound area. They donated the property to the South Pudget Sound Churches of Christ in 1978. This year will be the 30th Anniversary of the Delano Bay Christian Camp. To mark this occasion, a major event is planned for the 4th of July 2009 at the camp to celebrate, rejoice and give thanks. This is a historical milestone. We hope to see hundreds of former campers from all over the country and visitors from all local congregations that will join the event and enjoy the day! Plan to be there! We urgently invite you send us stories, tell us about any relic, old photo’s, articles, old film or old video footage you might have. Let your friends, parents and anyone that you know has been involved with Delano Bay know about this important and historical event. A blog will be created where you can tell us about your camp experiences and related stories where you can also post some photo’s. The blog address will be announced soon! Watch this space. More to come!
